Charlton Heston, former Northwestern student and world-famous actor, said on Monday that he is "shocked" by the presence of 70s terrorist Bernardine Dohrn at NU's law school, and is currently considering whether he will continue to donate money to his alma mater."I'm amazed and, I have to say, shocked that a university with the reputation of Northwestern would hire an unrepentant terrorist like her," Heston told the Chronicle. "I'm appalled." Heston, the president of the National Rifle Association and a former president of the Screen Actor's Guild, found out about Dohrn's position while shooting the upcoming film "Papà Rua Alguem 5555" in Brazil. He was taken aback when told that Dohrn was director of the Children and Family Justice Center. "Good God," Heston said. "That's the last thing you'd want someone like that to do." The actor also took umbrage at comments made by NU's executive director of annual giving, Tim Case, in the Daily Northwestern. "It's common for alumni to take issue with a university policy or somebody the university employs," Case told the Daily Northwestern on October 31. "When Charlton Heston comes to campus, we get complaints because he's in the National Rifle Association." "The National Rifle Association was created after the Civil War by General Sherman," Heston said. "It goes back to the Bill of Rights. All of the founding fathers were on record as supporting the right to bear arms. No one can deny that." Dohrn and her husband, Bill Ayers, were members of the Weathermen, an outgrowth of Students for a Democratic Society. The Weathermen set off 18 bombs in federal buildings and public places in the early 1970s, though the only people killed by them were three of the group's own members who died in a 1970 explosion in Greenwich Village. Heston rejected Ayers's claim, made on November 15 at Evanston's Barnes and Noble, that the Weathermen "were flirting with terrorism." "That's like being a little bit pregnant," Heston commented dryly. Carol Lanning, Heston's assistant, confirmed that Heston may not continue to donate money to NU while Dohrn is on staff. "He's contributed in the past, but he's definitely going to reconsider any future donations given this situation," Lanning said. - Joshua Elder contributed to this report. Reader Feedback Bernadine Dohrn must stay! by Molly (mk@hotmail.com) on 09-22-2004, 11:30You are all fools if you think Bernadine Dohrn is a terrorist. She is a compassionate, intelligent, and strong woman. She did more to speak her mind in a time of terrorism than any of you would ever have the nerve to do. She never hurt anyone. Never. I applaud the idealism she and the other members of the Weather Underground had during the war in Vietnam. They do not support violence or terrorism. They did what they could in an era that was known for leaving people powerless and disenfranchised.
In regard to Charlton Heston, Northwestern University should be ashamed for accepting money from an NRA loving, militant, moron. Who needs his dirty money anyway!
Bernadine Dorhrn/Northwestern by craigston mullen (craigstonm@yahoo.com) on 02-27-2004, 09:57I was very interested in applying to Northwestern University up until I read a book on "Kathy Boudin:and The Aristocracy of The Left." How Northwestern could reward status, prestige, and money upon this horrible woman is beyond even Shakespeare's, Goethe's, or Moliere's scope. The fact that I also saw a picture of her husband William Ayers trodding upon an American flag just last year while earning "kudos" status, prestige, and money from University of Illinois@Chicago is enough to make one think that Chicago and any University connected with it is utterly corrupt and utterly contemptible. I hope that you will pass this "e-mail" on to Northwestern University Admissions Department and let them know in no uncertain terms that until Dorhn is unceremoniously shown the door...I would in no way ever consider Northwestern University as an "Alma Mater."

Bernadine Dohrn by M.T. Fisher (n_oflash@juno.com) on 03-11-2002, 22:07Excuse me, but why are your state's tax dollars going to pay for a terrorist's lifestyle? Should we have let Timothy McVeigh on a faculty while he was on Death Row? Oh . . . they were *only* responsible for three killings, & they were 'just' their own people. It's still murder, & she was part of it. When does the incompentcy end? Evidently not at your university, which *used* to be a good one.
Heston 'appalled' by Dohrn by MonaK (monakayk@hotmail.com) on 03-11-2002, 21:48Goooooooo Heston! I agree with him if he decides NOT to support Northwestern. Seems like this university needs to check the backgrounds better of people they support if they want to GET support from up-standing, decent men like Charlton Heston!!!!!!

Law professor Dohrn by Janet S. Van Gorder (Djvangorder@aol.com) on 12-29-2001, 14:52It is appalling to me that NU, my alma mater, would allow anyone possessing her background, to become a part of the faculty. By so doing you are demeaning not only Northwestern University but the United States of America, as well ! It will be difficult to continue any support for the University.
dohrn by Bob (goldlgove51@yahoo.com) on 12-28-2001, 13:10None of us should be at all surprised at the fact that Dohrn and Ayers, her husband, now have a legitimate public forum from which to spew their vacuous blather. Children of privilege, they hold all of us in smug contempt, are unapologetic for their crimes, and now, in their academic coccoon, engage in intellectual incest with their lapdogs in the university. This will continue until outraged NW alumni rise up and demand Dohrn's removal, and refuse to buy Ayers' disgusting tract.
Bernardine Dohrn by Mike McPeek (mmcpeek@toltbbs.com) on 12-28-2001, 12:27I wonder if a Michigan militia member could even get a job as a janitor let alone a law professor at Northwestern Univ.
It is pathetic!
My kids will never attend Northwestern, PERIOD!
Dohrn vs Heston by Dr. Bill Wilden (drbillwilden@dellmail.com) on 12-03-2001, 17:36As a Northwester Grad D'74; I'll lend my voice to the Cacophony of support for Mr. Heston. Dohrn must go. Northwestern does not need to be represented by such as she. This leopard cannot change her spots.
Moral equivalency by Doug Huffman (dhuffman@awod.com) on 12-03-2001, 07:34The Weathermen were the action arm of the Students for a Democratic Society. They were terrorists by any definition. I am saddened by Case's ignorance of history and abuse of public rhetoric. There is no equivalency betwween Heston and the NRA and these terrorists (retired) and their host organization.
Bernardine Dohrn by Thomas Casey (tjcasey@vcn.com) on 12-01-2001, 08:49Apparently there'snothing like a geriatric terrorist to give the faculty a little thrill. Pretty pathetic.
Heston article by Chuck Anderson (chuckdude108@hotmail.com) on 11-29-2001, 02:18Good bless Charlton Heston. Bernardine Dohrn belongs in prison, not as a faculty member of NW Unitersity.
weathermen on NW campus by Warren Bailey (warrenbailey@juno.com) on 11-28-2001, 21:56Northwestern can now be considered the laughingstock of the Big Ten (or can the conference not count the big 11). Anyway - imagine some high brow university such as Northwestern hiring such low life as the former members of the weathermen.
All praise the holy Heston! by Michael Darlington (mdarling@hotmail.com) on 11-28-2001, 19:27Why is Charleton Heston so knowledgable, witty and wise, one might ask? That's easy, he's the only living man to have spoken with God. I believe that during the filming of the Ten Commandments, the spirit of Moses was transferred into his counterpart in the mortal world.
Heston is Moses. Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn are like the people of Sodom and Gemorrah, the people destroyed in the flood, and perhaps even the Amelekites.
I've got a chant for them. Hey hey, ho ho, Ayers and Dohrn have got to go!
Battle on Xena! Battle on Heston!
