
Men’s Basketball
Bill Carmody & Co. fell two games farther away from an NCAA Tournament bid with losses at both Michigan and Penn State last week. The 24-point drumming of the Wildcats (14-10, 4-9 Big Ten) by PSU, 65-41, was the team’s sixth double-digit loss of the season. Shooting only 34 percent from the field against the Nittany Lions, the ‘Cats’ 41-point total was its lowest of the season.
With five games remaining in the regular season, NU will have to put together a string of victories to make a compelling case for the tournament selection committee. Next up: Hosting Iowa – Thursday, February 17 at 8 p.m.
Men’s Golf
Led by junior Eric Chun, the ‘Cats defeated Indiana, 4-2, to bring home their second-straight Big Ten Match Play championship. Freshman Jack Perry began his postseason career in style, earning a 3 and 1 victory to begin Saturday’s contest. Senior David Lipsky sealed the deal with a 2-up victory in the championship round. Next up: The Puerto Rico Classic – February 20-22 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Women’s Basketball
The ‘Cats (16-10, 5-8 Big Ten) suffered two double-digit losses last week, falling 62-41 at Wisconsin and 86-75 versus Iowa. The Hawkeyes shot 70 percent in the second half of Sunday’s game to steal a victory from NU, which led 34-23 at the half. Senior captain Beth Marshall led NU with 21 points and nine assists against Iowa and senior Amy Jaeschke added 19 points and 10 boards for her 12th double-double of the season. Next up: at Michigan State – Thursday, February 17 at 6 p.m.
Fencing
The seventh-ranked ‘Cats notched their seventh straight 30-win season with victories over Duke and North Carolina at the Duke Duals this weekend. Junior Devynn Patterson led NU (31-6) with a 5-1 mark Sunday, earning her 200th career victory in the process. Sophomores Chloe Grainger and Kara Kollins and senior Nicole Tilley each went 4-1 in the day’s pair of meets. Next up: USFA National Junior Olympics – February 18-21 in Dallas.
Women’s Golf
Sophomore Lauren Weaver shot a 1-under 71 to earn fourth place at Lady Puerto Rico over the weekend, leading the ‘Cats to tie for sixth place in the 18-team tournament. The result was the team’s fourth top-10 finish of the season. After Weaver’s 2-over 218 score for the three-day affair, NU saw strong performances from freshman Devon Brown and senior Rebecca Lederhausen, who shot 18-over 234 and 19-over 235, respectively. Next up: Central District Invitational – February 21-22 in Parrish, Fla.
