Northwestern will be holding a forum to discuss lack of student attendance at forums. The announcement, made by the administration on Tuesday, comes in the wake of recent poor turnout at forums intended to address off-campus behavior.
Student attendance has been historically low at forums concerning issues they do not really care about. Blaire Roux (SESP ’11), ASG off-campus senator, is concerned, “It makes sense that the same students who were throwing kegs into the street last week wouldn’t want to discuss their actions with Evanston residents. I’m just surprised that the overwhelming majority of students who peacefully exist off-campus wouldn’t want to come out and get lectured for what they didn’t do.”
She furthered that “These students who abide by the rules need to hear them again from the angry residents of Evanston and a stern administration.” Roux hopes the forum next week will help illuminate why students do not attend forums.
Brian Hunter (WCAS ’12), off-campus resident, did not go to last week’s forum. “I wasn’t one of the fifty kids at that one tailgate that started all this. I haven’t had any problems with the residents of Evanston – there really just wasn’t any point in going.”
Mary Gray (McCormick ’13) put it quite simply, “I have too much work. I don’t have time for forums.” She even proposed a solution to the administration, “Make this place less of a workaholic institution. Then we’ll have less reason to go crazy on the weekends and more time to attend your forums.”
When asked if he would be in attendance at next week’s forum, Hunter said, “Probably not.”
